HOW TO KEEP MOLD OUT OF YOUR REFRIGERATOR

Tips On How To Keep Mold Out Of Your Refrigerator

I use essential oils for everything from cleaning my home to diffusing, and using it topically! Cloves, cinnamon, peppermint, and rosemary are a great blend of essential oils to prevent mold from growing inside your refrigerator. Essential oils are antimicrobial and can work wonders for cleaning and disinfecting your home, it will kill the spores that create growth and bacteria. Use this recipe each time you clean out your fridge and this will keep the mold away and leaving it smelling fresh and clean! If you don’t have essential oils, you can substitute lemon or citrus peels.Using citrus peels or zest in your refrigerator can provide a fresh scent and may help deter mold growth due to its natural antimicrobial properties, However, it’s important to note that while citrus peels or zest can contribute to a fresher environment, it may not be as effective as essential oils in inhibiting mold growth over an extended period. It’s essential to maintain good hygiene practices and monitor your refrigerator regularly to prevent mold growth effectively. If you’re dealing with persistent mold issues, consider consulting with a professional for further advice and assistance.

  • 2 cups of water
  • 1/3 cup white distilled vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon baking soda (pour slowing, the vinegar & baking soda will fizz)
  • A blend of 12 drops essential oils (a great blend for mold & mildew are cloves, cinnamon, peppermint & rosemary. About 3 drops each)
  • A few drops of hand dish soap

Directions:

Remove food and liquids from the fridge and disregard all food with mold & mildew. Mix solutions together in 24-32 oz. glass spray bottle. It’s best to use glass when using essential oils. The essential oils can degrade plastic. Shake bottle well before each use. Spray solution directly into the refrigerator and let sit for a few minutes. Pull out drawls & bins and let the solution soak for about 15 minutes. Scrub, rinse and then wipe clean with a microfiber cloth. Always remember to wear latex gloves to protect your hands from the mold & mildew, also the essential oils can irritate your skin. Keep a fresh open box of baking soda in your fridge, just add 2-4 drops of lemon essential oil inside the box of baking soda & mix to absorb any lingering odors.

To clean the rubber stripping on the inside of your refrigerator doors where the mold can harbor into the seams just use a mixture of vodka and a few drops of lemon essential oils and add to a spray bottle, just shake and spray! Then wipe clean!

Note: Test on a small area first to make sure the surface doesn’t get damaged, also remember that many essential oils are solvents and can be irritating to the skin when used in larger amounts like cinnamon and cloves, always wear gloves when wiping down surfaces.

I never think to clean the rubber stripping unless visibly dirty, eek! That totally makes sense. Just this past while I have encountered quite a bit of mold with our garden harvest sound slike I might need to do a really good scrub down.

I’m going to have to try this, I always have problems with the mould coming back no matter how often I clean it.

I had no idea that essential oils degrade plastic. Your mixture sounds very easy to make. Anything I can do to make the house and refrigerator smell better is a good thing. Thank you!

Could you put bicarb soda and a few drops of clove oil in a small ceramic bowl and leave in the fridge?
